Brexit blues: your thoughts on the referendum

Post by abby.yao » Sun Jun 26, 2016 1:19 pm

These past few days, Britain's impending exit from the EU has been in the news and all over my Facebook feed. Many people have commented on it so eloquently and humourously, but it's still worth discussing. On the academia end, it's a real shame because it will affect mobility and the exchange of ideas. In short, everything that EM is all about. As an EM alumna who studied in London, I hope that there will continue to be EM programmes in the UK. It helps to have British institutions as they add credibility to the programmes.

For the most part, Leave has been a decision based on immigration policy. Let's face it: No race that has been in a certain place "first" likes immigration because they feel threatened. That's a normal human reaction. But guess what? Immigration is a catalyst for so much diversity, development and innovation in every possible realm, from the arts, business, culture, science, and tech. It's unfortunate that many Britons blame immigrants for many things that are not going right in the UK but not for their contributions to society.

The economic repercussions are starting to be felt in not-so Great Britain. Worse still is that the vote has given many racists the gall to call out minorities who aren't doing anything wrong.

Regrexit? Highly likely. We'll see more of the consequences later on.

Agree with everything you said! My facebook feed got really scary as well, with all the incidents of racism in the UK lately..

As for the academic world, I saw that Sheffield University (one of the universities of my pathway) recently published the official response to the outcome of the referendum, as well as FAQs for students and staff. I imagine it might be of interest for someone, so I'll post the links here, if you don't mind:

Thank you for dropping by again, Oksana! I hope the referendum won't make EM students' lives harder.

Also posting statements from UCL, in case any of you are going there:
